CLACKAMAS – The Umpqua women’s basketball team opened the 2016 season with a strong showing at the Clackamas Thanksgiving Invite over the weekend. The Lady Riverhawks won three consecutive games to claim the tournament championship on Sunday.

The Riverhawks dominated the competition, winning by 40 points over Pierce College in their first round game Friday, by 38 over Olympic in the semifinals Saturday, and cruising to a 28-point victory in the championship game against Clackamas on Sunday.

Roseburg High School graduate Jordan Stotler led Umpqua during at tournament. The freshman averaged a double-double, with 22.7 points and 15 rebounds per game.  The 6-foot-4 freshman also had 12 blocks during the tournament, including seven in the title game.

Umpqua’s Dajanay Powell also averaged a double-double in the tournament (19.7 points and 10 rebounds per game). The 6-foot3 freshman scored a season-high 32 points in Saturday’s win over Olympic. It was the most points scored by a Riverhawks player so far this year.

Up next, the Riverhawks head to Bellevue College for the Bulldog Classic, an 8-team tournament starting Friday. Umpqua will face Skagit Valley in the first round.
