UMPQUA BASIN – With the fall season ending, the winter sports season is just getting underway. Monday marks the first day of practices for boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and swimming.

Many teams will be looking to follow-up successful seasons from a year ago. On the basketball court, the Oakland boys will try to defend their Mountain View League title from last season, while the Yoncalla boys will try to repeat as district champs and improve on last year’s 6th place finish.

The Sutherlin girls basketball team will look to win its fourth straight state title this winter and the North Douglas girls will try to get back to the 1A state title game, where they finished runner-up a year ago.

On the wrestling mats, the Roseburg Indians will aim for their fourth straight state team title and ninth in 11 years.

Teams have about 2.5 weeks of practices before games or matches can begin taking place.
