Roseburg wrestlers Layne Van Anrooy and Haydn Maley signed letters of intent Wednesday night in front of a crowd of local community members. Both seniors will look to become the first four time state champions in Roseburg high school history. The Indians will start practice Monday. Head coach Steve Lander explained what it meant to have two of his wrestlers sign letters of intent with prominent wrestling programs “It means a lot. Mostly for them to be rewarded for all their efforts because wrestling is a hard, hard thing to do in a lot of ways. Any chance we can reward our kids for their efforts we try to take advantage of it because most of the time were requiring them to do an tremendous amount of work. I’m proud that they’re going to good schools and their going have everything available to them to reach whatever heights or goals they choose to reach. I’m anxious to see how good they can be.”

Maley talked about the experience “It’s a great accomplishment and I think it really makes my parents proud to see me go off to a great academic and athletic school. All the hard work I’ve put in and my parents have put in. All the time and dedication is paying off. It’s awesome to have that.”

Haydn plans on studying Management Sciences and Engineering at Stanford.

Maley talked about choosing Stanford University “Stanford is coming in ranked 11th in the nation and the team believes that they can compete and I felt like I can really accomplish my dreams and my goals there.”

Van Anrooy talked about signing with Michigan “It means a lot to me. Michigan is a Big-Ten school, the best wrestling conference in the nation. The whole thing is just awesome. It’s hard to put into words what it took to get here, hard work, my family and my coaches have been behind me pushing me the whole way, it’s just a great experience. I couldn’t do it without them.”

Layne talked about finishing out his senior year at Roseburg “I’m really excited to finish out my senior year with this program. It’s given so much to me and I can’t wait to give back if I win a fourth straight title. Haydn and I have an opportunity to do that together and I can’t wait to bring that back to the program.”
