UMPQUA BASIN – Seasons were on the line for a number of Umpqua Basin fall sports teams this weekend and when all was said and done only a few were still standing.
The football state playoffs hung in the balance for a handful of teams on Friday and Saturday. Douglas faced off with Scappoose in a 4A play-in game, but the Trojans came up short in a 47-27 loss. The defeat ended Douglas’s season, while Scappoose moved on to the first round of the 4A state playoffs.
The Oakland Oakers battled Monroe on Friday for second place in the Mt. View Conference and an automatic spot in the 2A state playoffs. The Oakers let the chance slip through their grasp as the Dragons pulled away for a 40-14 victory that secured them a spot in the playoffs. Oakland ended its season with a 6-3 overall record.
At the 1A level, local teams were fighting for playoffs berths through their league playoff system. Camas Valley, Days Creek, and North Douglas all came out winners over the weekend to advance to the 1A state playoffs. The first round games of the 1A playoffs will be played on Friday and Saturday.
The South Umpqua football team had the week off after securing a play-in round bye, but the Lancers were intently watching the scoreboard. South Umpqua’s first round opponent was decided by the results of Friday’s games. The Baker Bulldogs defeated Stayton 49-15 in a play-in game and will next visit South Umpqua in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday.
It’s not just football teams seeking a state title. Three Umpqua Basin volleyball teams are still alive in the post season. Glide, Days Creek, and North Douglas all advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective state playoff brackets.
Glide defeated St. Mary’s of Medford on Saturday to advance. The Wildcats are the No. 1 seed in the 3A bracket and will face Westside Christian on Friday in the quarterfinals. The rest of the 3A bracket will be played out at Forest Grove High School, where the final eight teams will battle for a trophy. Find the full 3A playoff bracket HERE.
The final eight 1A volleyball teams will meet in Redmond on Friday to begin the final weekend of matches. Days Creek and North Douglas have both reached the round of eight and will play Friday. North Douglas is the No. 2 seed and faces Crane. Days Creek is the 9-seed and faces top-ranked Country Christian. Check out the entire 1A volleyball playoff bracket HERE.
While three local teams are still playing, three Umpqua Basin teams didn’t make it past the weekend. The Roseburg volleyball team saw its season end in the second round of the 6A state playoffs with a 3-1 loss at Sunset. The Douglas volleyball team lost 3-1 against Baker in the first round of the 4A playoffs. Sutherlin volleyball also lost in the first round, 3-0 against Valley Catholic.
Finally, the Sutherlin girls soccer team has advanced to the first round of the state playoffs with a 2-1 overtime win against Baker in the play-in round. The Lady Bulldogs will visit Gladstone on Tuesday. The Douglas boys and South Umpqua girls both lost their play-in games and saw their seasons come to an end.
