NORTH BEND – The Douglas volleyball team missed its chance to clinch a berth in the first round of the 4A state playoffs on Tuesday, but the Lady Trojans still have an opportunity to make it into the bracket for the first time since 2010.
Douglas lost 3-1 to Siuslaw in a league playoff game. The match was to determine which team would be the number one seed out of the Far West League after the Trojans and Vikings finished tied during the regular season.
Douglas lost the first two sets, but rallied to take the third. The momentum was short lived. Siuslaw cruised to a 25-14 victory in the fourth set to take the match.
Darian Mitchell led the Trojans with 13 kills, 15 digs, and three service aces. Rachel Hickam added 12 kills, nine digs, and three stuff blocks. Maddyson Wisby finished with 17 digs and Molly Lavin-Williams had 34 assists.
The loss means Douglas will have to make its way into the state playoffs through a play-in game. Douglas has been paired up against Sweet Home. The Trojans will host the Huskies sometime over the next week.
South Umpqua and Sutherlin have also made the play-in round. Their match-ups were announced Tuesday night. South Umpqua received an at-large bid as the fourth place team in the Far West League and will travel to face the Henley Hornets on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Sutherlin finished third in the Sky-Em League, but had a high enough ranking to earn a home play-in game against North Bend. A date and time for this match has not yet been announced.
