SUTHERLIN – The Sutherlin girls soccer team pulled out a huge win in Sky-Em League play as they beat the Elmira Falcons 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Both teams had chances to score early in the game. The Falcons scored a goal that was reversed due to an off sides call about ten minutes into the match. After a back and forth first half the game was tied at halftime 0-0.

Four minutes into the second half Megan Carrillo put the Bulldogs up 1-0 on a run down play where she battled the defender off to kick the ball just past the goalkeeper and into the net. Kirstyn Thomas assisted on the goal.

The Falcons made a charge to tie the game late in the second half with a couple chances, but couldn’t convert.  Once again it was Megan Carrillo scoring for the Bulldogs late in the game with two minutes remaining to seal the 2-0 victory for Sutherlin.  Eliza Sorenson assisted on the goal off a free kick that she crossed into the box where Megan was able to touch it past the goalkeeper.

“I thought we played really well tonight, big game at home and the opportunity to at least finish no worse than 2nd with the win tonight,” head coach Kevin Hunt said. “The girls did well defensively and getting an early goal in the second half makes a huge difference.”

With the win the Bulldogs are guaranteed a home play-in game in Sutherlin and a possibility to tie as league champions if they win Thursday at Junction City, the league leader.

The win brings Sutherlin to 6-2-1 in league play a vast contrast to the past two seasons in Sutherlin, where the Bulldogs had no league wins two years ago and one league win last year. Sutherlin is ranked 13th in the OSAA rankings.
