CORVALLIS – The Oregon State Beavers took a big hit on Monday and it wasn’t on the football field. Head coach Gary Andersen made a big announcement regarding the health of his starting quarterback Darrell Garretson during his weekly press conference.

“We never say anything about injuries,” coach Andersen explained to reporters. “The only time I ever respond to any injuries is if someone is out for the season and that’s the case for Darrell.”

Garretson reportedly suffered an injury to his left ankle. Andersen went on to say that if the Beavers were to make a bowl game, Garretson might be able to return to the field. Garretson had started in six games for the Beavers this year and had thrown for 617 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. He had also run for three scores as well.

True-freshman Connor Blount had been Garretson’s back-up most of the year, but he was also injured last week after taking over for Garretson in the Utah game. Blount is out with a knee injury and appears to be unavailable for Oregon State this week against No. 5 Washington. Andersen announced that third-string QB Marcus McMaryion will start for OSU on Saturday.

It will be the first start this season for McMaryion, who had competed for the starting job during the off season. McMaryion threw a touchdown pass last week against the Utes and has played in two games for Oregon State this year. The sophomore played in seven games for the Beavers last year as a freshman and started in the Civil War against Oregon. He finished his freshman season with 403 passing yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He added one rushing touchdown to his stat line in 2015.
