COOS BAY – There’s now a logjam for the fourth and final playoff spot out of the Northwest Athletic Conference South Region, after the Umpqua women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 against SW Oregon on Wednesday.
Umpqua, SWOCC, and Clackamas are all tied with 3-4 records.
The Lakers controlled the late stages of the first two sets to runaway with 25-17 and 25-20 victories. The Riverhawks took the third set 25-19 and built a sizable 7-point lead midway through the fourth set. SWOCC went on an 8-1 rally to tie the game at 18-all and it was a back-and-forth race to the finish.
Umpqua had two chances at match point in the fourth set, but couldn’t close the deal to extend the contest. SWOCC earned the victory with a 28-26 final score in the fourth set.
Sutherlin grad Olivia Gulliford led the Riverhawks with 19 kills, eight digs, and 29 assists.
The Riverhawks take a break from conference play until next weekend. Up next is a non-conference match against Centralia at home on Saturday.
