UMPQUA BASIN – The fall high school sports season is starting to enter the home stretch and there’s a lot important match-ups coming up on Tuesday for the local Umpqua Basin teams looking to make a push towards the playoffs.
The Roseburg volleyball team is closing in on its first conference championship since the 2013 season. The Indians are 7-0 in Southwest Conference play and host the defending league champion Sheldon Irish on Tuesday night.
Roseburg previously defeated the Irish in straight sets at the start of conference play back in early September. Sheldon comes into the match in third place in the conference standings.
The Indians and Irish tipoff their match at 6:45 p.m. at Roseburg High School.
The Sutherlin Bulldogs are trying to hold on to second place in the Sky-Em League volleyball standings as the regular season winds down. The Lady Bulldogs have just one league loss on their record and remain just one-game behind league-leader Sisters.
Sutherlin gets ready to visit fifth place Junction City on Tuesday. The match starts at 6 p.m.
In boys soccer news, the Douglas Trojans host league leader North Bend on Tuesday, with hopes of avenging a 6-0 loss from almost three weeks ago. The Trojans would also like to move up from third place in the Far West League standings.
Douglas and North Bend kickoff their match at 3 p.m. in Winston.
And from a match played on Monday, the Umpqua Valley Christian boy’s soccer team got back into the win column after suffering its first defeat of the season last Thursday. The Monarchs scored three first-half goals on their way to a 7-1 win over Southwest Christian. UVC remains ranked No. 2 in the state by the OSAA and is currently second in its conference standings.
