WINSTON – Douglas volleyball beat North Bend High School Thursday night in a five match thriller.

After going down a set, Douglas battled back easily winning the second set and eventually taking the third with some clutch plays late in the set to take 2-1 lead . However, North Bend continued to fight and came up with crucial points in the fourth to push the match to a fifth and final set. North Bend started the final set up 6-1, but Douglas came back tying the match several times as the teams went back and forth. Finally, Douglas was able to win the match with some big plays late that sealed the victory for the Trojans.

The match was the fourth consecutive five set match Douglas has played.

Coach Carl Bone talked about the toughness of his team. “I tell you they just keep battling, battling, battling, they don’t give up. They feel confident in what they can do and they keep hanging in there. I’m just really proud of them, I can’t say enough about it.”

Darian Mitchell led the team with 21 kills to help overpower North Bend. Molly Lavin-Williams had 38 assists and Lainey Rincon had 29 digs to help the Trojans prevail in a very close match. The win brings both teams to a 4-2 league record trailing only Siuslaw who is 5-1.

After a big time performance and an important league win the Trojans are staying focused.

“Right now were just taking it one game at a time. We just want to keep getting better,” said coach Bone after the victory. “If we can work on things in practice and keep improving then good things will happen.”

Douglas will play Saturday in the North Marion Fall Classic Tournament and returns to league play next Tuesday against Brookings-Harbor. North Bend plays at South Umpqua next Tuesday in a game that will surely have playoff implications.
