MYRTLE CREEK – Thursday was a pretty big day for South Umpqua sports as the Lady Lancers carried the way to a couple of big victories.

It started with the South Umpqua girls soccer team picking up a 4-2 victory over Douglas for its first win of the year. The Lancers had battled through some lopsided loses, but persevered to finally get a victory.

Douglas took an early 1-0 lead, but it was the Lancer captains that helped lead the comeback. Junior Tiona Eggert scored a first half goal to tie the match at 1-1 and senior Madisen Castro found the back of the net to put the Lancers up 2-1 before the half. Castro struck again in the second half for the final score, doubling up the Lady Trojans.

The win puts South Umpqua at 1-2 in Far West League play. Douglas falls to 0-3.

The South Umpqua volleyball team followed the lead of the girls soccer team and notched its first league win of the season. After a couple of narrow league losses, the Lady Lancers finally got over the hump with a 3-0 sweep against Marshfield.

The win snapped a 5-match losing streak for the South Umpqua girls.

Unfortunately, the South Umpqua boys soccer team couldn’t make it a clean sweep for the Lancers. The Douglas Trojans controlled the game and cruised to a 4-0 win in Far West League action.
