SUTHERLIN – The Douglas Trojans scored on their first drive of the game and dominated the first half of their 27-0 non-league victory over Sutherlin Friday night, on the artificial turf at Sutherlin High School..

Douglas took advantage of great field position on the opening kickoff and marched the ball 57 yards for a score with Damon Landry going two yards for the score with just under three minutes gone in the game.  Carter Dahl hit Charles Osborne in the end zone for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0.

The Trojans had another short field later in the first quarter, when they went 23 yards in six plays with Dahl hitting Parker Sheppard on a one-yard pass to make it 14-0 late in the first quarter, and the Trojans were threatening to turn it into a rout.

Another turnover by the Bulldogs gave the Trojans the ball at the Sutherlin 18 and it took three plays to punch in another score, with Michael Wannamaker going 11 yards and Elijah Wiegman adding the PAT for a 21-0 lead going into halftime.

Just a minute later, on the return after an interception, Alex Kennedy, the Bulldogs starting center and defensive tackle took a hard hit and had to be taken out on a stretcher.  He was taken to CHI Mercy Medical Center and checked for possible neck and head injuries.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs couldn’t get much offense going until late in the third quarter when they went on an 18 play,  66-yard drive that ended at the two yard line when they failed to score on fourth down.

The Trojans then put the game out of reach, when they went 60 yards in seven plays with Wannamaker going over from two yards out for his second touchdown of the game with six minutes to go, to make it 27-0 and that’s how it ended.

The Bulldogs had another chance to score when they drove to the one with :01 left on the clock. After a time out, the snap from center was fumbled and and they were turned away again.

Dahl finished the game 18-of-37 passing, for 198 yards and a touchdown..

Tristan Needham completed 6-of-16 with two interceptions.  Korbyn Jones caught four of those passes. Conner Grauf led the rushing with 81 yards on 12 carries.

Douglas (1-1) snapped a seven game losing streak with the victory. They will host Hidden Valley next Friday in their final non-league game.

Sutherlin (0-2) has now lost 8 in a row. They will try to break that streak when they go on the road next Friday to face North Valley in Merlin. You can hear the game on i101 FM with pregame at 6:45 p.m.
