EUGENE – The Roseburg volleyball team started out conference play on the right foot by defeating defending league champion Sheldon on Tuesday. The Indians had to go on the road to face the Irish, but pulled out a sweep winning 27-25, 26-24, 28-26.
The narrow victory keeps Roseburg undefeated on the year and gives the team a big confidence boost to start the season. Last year Roseburg finished runner-up to Sheldon in the race for the conference crown.
The Indians made it a clean sweep over Sheldon, with the JV and JV2 teams winning as well.
The Indians will host Grants Pass Thursday.
The Sutherlin volleyball team continued its strong start to the season with straight-sets victory over North Valley in a non-league road game Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs kept the Knights at bay winning the first set 25-16, followed by a narrow 25-22 win in set two, and Sutherlin polished off the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the final set.
The win was a nice bounce-back for the Bulldogs, who suffered their first defeat in their previous match against Hidden Valley. Sutherlin will next play in the Hidden Valley Tournament starting Saturday.
