EUGENE – After Oregon’s season opening win against UC Davis on Saturday, head coach Mark Helfirch said that true freshman linebacker Troy Dye set a benchmark for how he’s going to play at the collegiate level. Taking a look back, that benchmark is pretty high.
His stats alone made for a memorable start to his college career, but now Dye has an award to go along with it. The Pac-12 Conference announced on Monday that Dye was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Dye had 11 tackles in his first collegiate start, including 4.5 tackles for loss and one QB sack. In addition, he blocked one field goal attempt. This, of course, is his first weekly conference award, but if this is the benchmark we should all be expecting plenty more.
