EUGENE – The Oregon football team held its first scrimmage of the fall on Tuesday at Autzen Stadium. Head coach Mark Helfrich said there is still a lot of work to do after the team struggled with consistency.
“The scrimmage was inconsistent. Very inconsistent,” Helfrich told reporters on Tuesday. “[There was] an opportunity for a bunch of guys, back-ups, to make plays and unfortunately didn’t make a lot of those.”
Helfrich went on to say that practice looked like a typical first scrimmage and he didn’t seem to be overly concerned by what he saw.
Even with the less than stellar play on Tuesday, the Ducks appear to have a leader in the race for the starting quarterback job. Helfrich told reporters that graduate-transfer Dakota Prukop has started to put himself at the front of the pack.
“There’s been a little bit of separation,” Helfrich noted. “Nothing drastic yet at this point, but Dakota has been the most consistent so far.”
Prukop threw for a touchdown in the scrimmage and ran for another. He was the quarterback for four of the nine scoring drives by the Oregon offense during the scrimmage. Sheldon graduate Justin Herbert helped direct four scoring drives for the Ducks at quarterback and Travis Jonsen produced one score.
