EUGENE – Fall camp got started Monday for the Oregon football team and head coach Mark Helfrich couldn’t help but reveal how excited he is to get things started.

“This time of year is like Christmas, because we go out and we kind of unwrap the presents of guys that we haven’t seen before,” Helfrich said to Voice of the Ducks Jerry Allen on Ducks Insider.

Over the next couple of weeks, Helfrich and offensive coordinator Matt Lubick will have the enjoyment of figuring out just what kind of gifts they are unwrapping with the three candidates they have for the starting quarterback job. The trio consists of graduate-transfer Dakota Prukop, redshirt freshman Travis Jonsen, and true freshman Terry Wilson.

Prukop and Jonsen appear to be the front-runners, but despite the intense competition, Jonsen says all three remain very supportive.

“Terry, he’s my boy. If he ever needs help, I’ll help him out and same thing with Dakota,” explained Jonsen. “When we’re on the field it’s all business. It’s all competition. But outside of football, and even on the field sometimes, we’re still homies and we’re still friends.”

When asked how soon he would like to have a quarterback selected, Helfrich said it’s not a decision he’ll rush, but ideally the Ducks would have the position battle settled a week or so before the first game of the season on September 3.
