CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Medford Mustangs are now on the brink of elimination after losing 5-4 in extra innings to Billings, Montana in the second round of the Northwest Regional on Thursday. Medford, the defending Northwest Regional champions, fell behind 4-2 going to the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Mustangs managed to tie the game on two balks by the Billings relief pitcher. Both balks were called because the Billings catcher stepped out of the box well before the pitch during an intentional walk.
In extra innings, Billings got a one-out RBI single to take a 5-4 advantage and the Mustangs didn’t have a rally in the bottom half of the 10th inning.
Medford now will face Cheyenne, Wyoming at 12:30 p.m. Friday with the season on the line.
