CENTRAL POINT, OR – The Class A American Legion baseball season came to an end over the weekend as the Roseburg Pepsi Bottlecaps fell short of their goal of winning the state tournament.

The Bottlecaps won their first two games of the tourney on Wednesday and Thursday last week, but lost to defending state champs North Medford on Friday. Facing elimination on Saturday, the Bottlecaps struggled to play clean baseball and ended the year with a 6-2 loss against the North Jackson Royals.

The Pepsi hitters managed 11 hits in the contest, but had a hard time coming up with the clutch hit at the right moment. The Bottlecaps finished the game with nine runners left on base. North Jackson, meanwhile, took a 3-0 lead before Pepsi managed to score twice in the third inning to get back within a run.

North Jackson stretched the lead back out with two more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh for the four-run victory.

The Royals went on to face North Medford for the state tournament championship on Sunday, but it was the Mavericks who won for a third straight year and fourth time in five seasons.

The Pepsi Bottlecaps finished the season with a 23-10 overall record.

LEGION AAA BASEBALL

It was a Medford sweep again for Legion baseball in Oregon. The Medford Mustangs won the Class AAA state tournament with a 6-2 win over Grants Pass on Sunday. Grants Pass entered Championship Sunday needing to beat the Mustangs twice to claim the state title. The Nuggets managed to steal game one 11-6, but they couldn’t pull off the sweep.

The Mustangs will now head to the Pacific Northwest Regional Tournament in Wyoming.
