GRANTS PASS – The Umpqua Lions baseball team ran away with a pair of wins against the Grants Pass Diggers on Tuesday to set up a showdown against cross-town rivals Pepsi for the Single-A Area 4 North title.
The Lions beat the Diggers 9-4 in game one and finished off the sweep with a 12-5 win in game two. The victories not only keep Umpqua in the race for the league title, but also clinch a post season berth for the Lions.
Umpqua trails Pepsi by two games. If the Lions are able to sweep a doubleheader against the Bottlecaps on Friday, the two teams would finish with identical records. Pepsi has already beaten Umpqua twice this season, so a pair of wins Friday for the Lions would mean a shared league championship.
The Umpqua Lions and Pepsi Bottlecaps will play each other on Friday, starting at 6 p.m.
