ROSEBURG – The Roseburg Doc Stewart’s baseball team knew making the post season after starting the year 1-7 in league play would be tough. With the odds stacked against them, the Doc’s rallied in July to put themselves in position to continue playing past the end of the regular season.
The Doc’s swept Willamette Valley on Tuesday and had their fingers crossed that Medford could sweep Grants Pass on Wednesday to help the Doc’s secure the final playoff spot out of the Area 4 conference. Grants Pass had other plans, as the Nuggets swept the Mustangs to take second place in the Area 4 standings and effectively eliminate the Doc’s from post season contention.
Except for, the Doc’s aren’t eliminated from post season contention. After traveling south to Grants Pass to watch the games, the players and coach Scott Shaver thought they watched the season end. But just after midnight Thursday, coach Shaver found out that Klamath Falls used ineligible players and the Falcons were being removed from the league standings and the results of their league games taken off the records of the other league teams.
As a result, the Doc’s, Medford, and Grants Pass all finish in a three-way tie for second place with 8-8 records. The Doc’s take the fourth-seed after tie-breaker scenarios were played out and the team will now travel to Gresham to face Advanced Metals, the second place team out of Area 2, in a best of three series starting Friday. Advanced Metals lost a league playoff game with the Portland Barbers on Wednesday to break a tie for first place.
The games will be played at Sandy High School, just east of Gresham in the shadow of Mt. Hood. Friday’s series opener will be played at 7 p.m. and game two on Saturday is scheduled for noon. If a game three is necessary, it will follow game two on Saturday. Coverage of the Doc’s games will begin 15 minutes prior to the start of each game.
