ROSEBURG – Success at the plate for Roseburg Doc Stewart’s clean-up hitter Will Reddekopp comes from “just taking the pitch where it wants to go.” Apparently the final pitch from Humboldt reliever Chase Thurston wanted to go towards left field for the game-winning hit Wednesday night.
With the Doc’s trailing 5-4 in the final frame of game two, Reddekopp drove a 1-1 pitch towards the gap in left-center field to score Shawn Rigsby from third and tie the game at 5-5. Dustin Eakin was running from first on the play and never stopped as he managed to out-run the relay throw to the plate for the game-winning run.
The 6-5 walk-off win gave the Doc’s a sweep over the Eagles following an 11-1 win in game one of the non-league doubleheader and it also gave the Doc’s their second three-game winning streak in less than a week.
Reddekopp finished game two with three hits, including two doubles. It’s the fourth time this season that Reddekopp has recorded three hits in a game. The performance raised Reddekopp’s already team-high batting average to an astounding .412.
The Doc’s blew out Humboldt with a 10-run mercy rule win in game one. The team recorded 13 hits and every player in the lineup had at least one. The Doc Stewart’s broke open the game with four runs in the second inning and reached double-digits with another six in the third.
The big lead made it easy for Cody Gray to pitch and he scattered four hits and two walks to allow one run. Gray finished with six strikeouts and earned his first win of the year.
The Doc’s were far less dominant in game two. The Eagles pulled ahead 4-0 through the first three innings with seven hits off of starter Zack Watkins.
The score was 5-0 when the Doc’s finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth. A throwing error let the Doc’s score again in the sixth to make the score 5-3. The Doc’s loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh and Chris Stone drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to get the Doc’s back within a run.
Reddekopp’s hit polished off the win, which he believes will help his team as they prepare for an important league showdown with Medford on Friday.
“That’s a great win for us. It gives us some momentum going into Medford,” explained Reddekopp. “I think what we’ve been struggling with is getting on a streak and getting on a roll. We got it going right now.”
Reddekopp has had it going all year at the plate and his team is starting to join him. Over the last 10 games the Doc’s have a 7-3 record and the hitters have raised the team batting average by more than 10 points. During this run Shawn Rigsby currently has a 10-game hitting streak, Zack Watkins had a seven-game hitting streak, Cam Lierman had four-straight games with at least one RBI, and guys like Dustin Eakin and Will Shaw have come off the bench to provide production.
With four games left, Friday’s doubleheader against Medford may have the post season hanging in the balance and the Doc’s will need the momentum to continue. Game one of the twin bill begins at 6 p.m. and broadcast coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com on the Doc Stewart’s Homepage.
