COOS BAY – The Umpqua Lions baseball team moved into sole possession of second place after a doubleheader sweep against North Coos on Monday. Playing on the coast, the Lions won game one 5-3 and then edged out North Coos 2-1 in game two.

The two teams had started the day tied for second with 5-3 records, but the Lions are now 7-3 and trail first place Pepsi by two games.

The Pepsi Bottlecaps were scheduled to play a doubleheader Tuesday against the Grants Pass Miners, but the Miners have forfeited the rest of their season, so the ‘Caps have earned an automatic two wins to improve to 11-1 in league games.

Both teams are back to action later this week. Umpqua visits South Medford for a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday, while Pepsi hosts North Coos for a league doubleheader on Thursday.
