ROSEBURG – Wryland McKnight tossed a complete game shutout in game two of the Roseburg Doc Stewart’s league doubleheader against Grants Pass on Tuesday to salvage a split and keep the Doc’s hopes of the post season alive.
The Doc’s were held in-check offensively in a 9-1 loss in the opener against the Nuggets, but McKnight kept Grants Pass off balance in game two by scattering six hits over seven innings for a 6-0 win. McKnight walked three batters and struck out two, while becoming the first three-game winner on the Doc’s pitching staff.
Will Reddekopp continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-3 at the plate in the nightcap. He scored the Doc’s first run in the second inning after reaching base with a leadoff double. Reddekopp scored on a two-out single by Dustin Eakin.
Reddekopp’s second hit came in the third when the Doc’s extended their lead by scoring three times. His single plated Zack Watkins, who scored the second run of the inning. Will Shaw finished off the scoring in the third with a two-out double to score Chris Stone and make the score 4-0.
The Doc’s scored their final run of the game on Reddekopp’s final hit, a single through the left side of the infield. The Doc’s cleanup hitter went 4-for-6 to finish the series against Grants Pass and is now hitting .392 on the year.
The win was a nice response to a poor first game, according to coach Scott Shaver. The Doc’s managed six hits against Grants Pass starter Mike Hults and left seven runners in scoring position. The defense also made mistakes, committing three errors. The final error was on a throw that would have ended the top of the seventh without Grants Pass scoring. Instead, Shawn Rigsby’s throw to first pulled Reddekopp off the bag and the Nuggets went on to score five times, stretching a 4-1 lead to a 9-1 advantage.
“We didn’t get what we wanted, but we got what we needed,” said coach Shaver. “We kept ourselves in the hunt and we got the tiebreaker on Grants Pass. It was a great answer by the boys.”
The Doc’s have four league games left to play. The team trails league leader Eugene by six games, but only trail second place Medford by three. The top four teams from Area 4 advance to the post season.
Up next, the Doc’s take a break from league games to host the Humboldt (CA) Eagles on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Legion Field. Game one is slated for a 6 p.m. start and broadcast coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com on the Doc Stewart’s Homepage.
