ROSEBURG – The Roseburg Doc Stewart’s baseball team rebounded from another one-run loss in game one of a league doubleheader against Eugene on Saturday night, to earn split by handing the Challengers their first league loss of the season.

Will Shaw tossed a complete game, four-hitter to lead the Doc’s to a 7-2 win in the nightcap. Shaw had a perfect game going through the first three innings against the Challengers and didn’t allow a run until the sixth inning. He struck out two Eugene batters and did not issue a walk to improve to 2-2 on the year.

The Doc’s took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a wild pitch from Eugene starter Josh Vitus, who’s inaccuracies cost him on three runs in the contest. A wild pitch in the third inning put Chance Beecher on third and a single by Zack Watkins brought him in to score. Another wild pitch in the fourth inning put Will Reddekopp on third and a single by Cody Gray allowed him to score putting the Doc’s up 3-0.

The Doc’s added three more runs in the fourth inning on a two-out double by Shawn Rigsby to stretch their lead to 6-0.  Roseburg scored its final run on an error by Eugene third baseman Marcus Lydon in the fifth inning.

The win in the nightcap helped blur the memories of another one-run loss for the Doc’s in the opener. Eugene pulled out to a 4-0 lead and held off a Doc’s rally for a 5-4 win.

Chance Beecher got the Doc’s rally started with a two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning to make the score 5-3. Shawn Rigsby got the Doc’s within one with a solo home run in the sixth. It was Rigsby’s first homer of the season.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Doc’s got the game-tying run on base when Cam Lierman drew a one-out walk. He stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Andrew Harrington. The Doc’s had the tying run 90 feet from home, but Eugene’s pitcher Matt Haney finished the game with a strike out of Cody Gray.

The Doc’s are now 2-8 in league games, but the team will have plenty of chances to improve that in the near future. Roseburg will play six more league games over the next three days. Up next is a visit to Grants Pass where the Doc’s will face the Nuggets. Game one of the doubleheader begins at 6 p.m. Broadcast coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com on the Doc Stewart’s Homepage.
