CORVALLIS – For the first time in five years, the Roseburg Doc Stewart’s baseball team finished outside the top four of the Mickey Riley Star Spangled Tournament in Corvallis. The Doc’s went 1-2 during pool play and landed in the fifth place game against a team from Century High School on Sunday to wrap-up the tournament.
The Doc’s were finishing up 11 straight days of baseball and the wear and tear was apparent as the team was beaten 10-1 by Century to place sixth. The Doc’s mustered up only four hits against Century starter Micky Thompson, who pitched a complete game and struck out nine Doc Stewart’s batters.
Meanwhile, the Century offense got off to a bang during the holiday weekend. The Mercenary scored six times in the first inning off of Doc’s starter Roy Benzel. Century scored in four of its six innings at the plate and tacked on 15 hits against three Doc’s pitchers.
The lone run for the Doc’s was scored in the fourth inning. Chris Stone was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Will Reddekopp and Cam Lierman followed with singles. On Lierman’s hit to centerfield, the Century fielder bobbled the ball allowing Stone to score an unearned run. The Doc’s managed just one more hit the rest of the game.
The Doc Stewart’s now get a chance to rest up for an important portion of the schedule. The team gets four days off before hosting the Eugene Challengers for a league doubleheader on Friday. The twin bill against the Challengers will be the first of four straight league doubleheaders up next on the Doc’s schedule. At 1-7 in league games, the Doc’s could turn around their season with a handful of wins in the next week.
Friday’s doubleheader against Eugene will take place at Legion Field starting at 6 p.m. Coverage of the contests will be broadcast on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com on the Doc Stewart’s Homepage.
