CORVALLIS – Miscues late in the game Saturday ended up costing the Roseburg Doc Stewart’s in a 2-1 loss against the Perth Heat Colts in the Mickey Riley Star Spangled Tournament.
Zack Mandera provided a strong start on the mound for the Doc’s. He didn’t allow a run and gave up just two hits to the Colts over the first five innings and the Doc’s pulled ahead 1-0 with an unearned run in the fifth. The lead didn’t hold as Perth took advantage of mistakes by the Doc’s in the sixth to take a lead.
Cody Gray took over in relief of Mandera and gave up a leadoff single in the sixth, but quickly made up for it by picking off the runner at first. A groundball to third baseman Will Shaw looked to be out number two, but his throw across the diamond was too low and the ball rolled away and out of play.

The Perth runner moved to second on the error and the next batter reached base on a single to put runners on first and third. Gray managed to get a strikeout, but during the at bat the runner at first stole second to put both runners in scoring position. With two outs, Gray surrendered a two out, pinch-hit single to Cameron Tilly that drove in the game-tying and go-ahead run to make it 2-1.
The Doc’s had their chance to tie the game in the seventh inning. The first two batters reached base on errors and the Doc’s had runners on first and third with no outs. Andrew Harrington tried to lay down a bunt to score the tying run, but it went right back to the mound and Will Shaw was tagged out trying to score from third.
With one out the Doc’s had runners at first and second. The second out was made on a passed ball that didn’t roll too far away. Terrell Jacks tried to advance to third from second and was tossed out by the Perth catcher. The final out was made on a strikeout by Zack Watkins.
The Doc’s finished with four hits, the most important of which was an RBI single by Tommy Ghasedi in the fifth. Ghasedi later left the game with an apparent knee injury suffered during a collision with Will Reddekop as both players tried to catch a pop-fly down the first base line.
The loss means the Doc’s will play for fifth place on Sunday at 1 p.m. The contest will be carried on 1490 The Score and online with video at 541radio.com on the Doc Stewart’s Homepage. Pregame coverage starts at 12:45 p.m.
