ROSEBURG – The Roseburg Doc Stewart’s picked-up their first win in league play with a late rally in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Willamette Valley Titans on Wednesday.

The Doc’s held a 5-1 lead over the Titans, but a four run sixth inning by Willamette Valley evened up the score. The Doc’s had to score three times in the sixth to pull back in front and they held on in the final frame to take an 8-5 victory.

Willamette Valley scored on an Aaron Patterson double in the first inning to lead 1-0 through the first three frames. The Doc’s finally got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring three times off of Titans’ starter Luke Jackson. Chance Beecher hit a fly ball to shallow center field, but Willamette Valley’s fielder seemed to lose the ball in the night sky and the hit fell allowing three runs to score with two outs.

The Doc’s added another two runs in the fifth inning to pull ahead 5-1. Willamette Valley rebounded to plate four runners in the top of the sixth off of Doc’s starter Roy Benzel. The Titans started with a double by Tommy Bennett, he later scored on a throwing error by catcher Terrell Jacks. Willamette Valley scored its final run of the inning just fractions of a second before Lucas Ward was tagged out at second base trying to stretch an RBI single into a double.

The Doc’s appeared to be letting another game slip through their grasps, but they responded to Willamette Valley’s resurgence by sending eight hitters to the plate in the home half of the sixth and scoring three times for the 8-5 advantage. Chris Stone and Cam Lierman each picked up RBI in the inning and Stone also scored on a throwing error.

In the seventh inning, Benzel surrendered back-to-back singles to open the frame, but Dalton McHugill came on in relief and shut the door by striking out the first hitter he faced and retiring the next two with pop-outs to right field. McHugill earned the first save by a Doc’s pitcher this season.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Doc’s. That streak was extended after the team lost game one 5-2. The Doc’s led 1-0 through the first five innings, but after both team scored a run in the sixth inning, Willamette Valley plated four runs in the top of the seventh to pull off the comeback victory.

Aaron Patterson pitched a complete game to beat the Doc’s. Will Reddekopp and Shawn Rigsby each had two hits for the Doc’s in the contest.

Up next for the Doc’s is a trip to Corvallis for the Mickey Riley Star Spangled Tournament. The annual tournament consists of eight teams. The Doc’s will play at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Sunday’s game will be determined by the team’s tournament record.
