ROSEBURG – The second day of action at the Doc’s Tournament in honor of Pee Wee Kelley ended with a wild contest for the host team. The Roseburg Doc Stewart’s scored six times in the fifth inning against Vancouver to rally for a 7-5 win in the final game on Saturday.

The Doc’s, who played as the visitors despite being on their home field, fell behind 4-1 through four innings of play. Vancouver starter Lucas Gregory had done a good job keeping the Doc’s off balance at the plate, but in the fifth inning he struggled with his control.

Gregory walked Tommy Ghasedi to start the inning, but followed by getting back-to-back outs. That’s when things fell apart. Gregory went on to hit Zack Watkins and then walk Chris Stone and Cam Lierman to bring in a run. Vancouver’s coaches made a pitching change, but reliever Levi Middly surrendered the lead after the first batter he faced, Will Reddekopp, hit a bases clearing double.

Reddekopp later scored on a single by Treven Jacks, who also scored in the fifth inning on a throwing error. When the fifth inning ended the Doc’s were ahead 7-4.

Vancouver rallied to score in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-5, but Doc’s starter Will Shaw managed to induce three-straight groundouts to end the game. Shaw picked up his first win of the year with the complete game performance.

With the win, the Doc’s finished tied for third with Corvallis in the tournament standings. Both teams went 2-1-1 during the round robin portion of the tournament. Now they will face off for a third place finish on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Doc’s started tournament play Saturday with a game against Medford. The Roseburg squad took a 2-0 lead early, but an eight-run third inning proved to be more than enough as the Mustangs went on to win 10-5. Medford will face Vancouver in the tournament championship game on Sunday at 5 p.m. Both teams finished round robin play with 3-1 records.

The final day of play from the Doc’s Tournament will begin with the fifth place game. Australia and Mid Valley will square off at 11 a.m.

NOTE: There was confusion in the top of the second inning when the Doc’s had the bases loaded with one out. Tommy Ghasedi was at the plate and took what was thought to be ball four on a full count pitch. There was some uncertainty about that and, after checking with Vancouver’s “home” book, it was determined it was only ball three. After the pitch, Cam Lierman had gone home and scored thinking it was a walk to Ghasedi and Will Reddekopp advanced to third also thinking it was a walk. The umpires determined that Lierman in fact scored on a stolen base and Reddekopp was ruled out after he was tagged by the Cardinal’s third basemen while off the bag. Ghasedi eventually struck out to end the inning. Below you will see video from the broadcast of the game and you will see Tommy Ghasedi had actually drawn a bases loaded walk.
