ROSEBURG – It was All-Star weekend for high school baseball in the state of Oregon.

At Legion Field in Roseburg, the 4A All-Star baseball series took place Saturday and Sunday. The South Umpqua Lancers were well represented by Shawn Rigsby, Hunter Buchanan, and Tristan Gross, who all played for the South team.

The games were mostly close, but the North side won the series by taking game one 5-4 and game three 7-4. The South team won game two 5-4.

Buchanan earned accolades for his performance pitching for the South team. He was named the Most Outstanding Pitcher for his squad after taking the mound in the first game of the series and holding the North team to no runs over four innings. Buchanan allowed just one hit, while striking out three, walking one and hitting a batter.

The Reser’s All-Star Series in Corvallis featured the top ball players from the 6A and 5A classifications, including Roseburg’s Zack Watkins, who played for the South team.

The three-game series, played at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State University, did not go well for the South team. The North squad won game one 10-3, the two sides tied game two at 3-3, and the final game was won by the North 3-0.

Watkins saw time in each contest at second base and managed to get two trips to the plate in each game. The former Indian finished the series without a hit, but did reach base once with a walk.

Watkins was the first Roseburg baseball since Tristan Guillen in 2013 to play in the series. Roseburg had a streak of four consecutive years where at least one player made the All-Star event, which features only players that have recently finished their senior seasons.
