ROSEBURG – A sloppy defensive effort proved costly as the Doc Stewart’s baseball team fell 15-5 in a non-league contest against the Fairfield Expos on Saturday.
The Expos scored in each of the first six innings, including a six run sixth inning that stretched the lead to double digits. The nine-inning game was shortened to seven due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Fairfield started the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning off of Doc’s starter Dalton McHugill. A one-out single by Justin Nehring drove in both runs . The Expos added three more runs on three straight hits in the second inning and pulled ahead 6-0 with another run in the third.
The Doc’s got on the board with four runs in the third inning. Tommy Ghasedi started the inning with a single to right field. It was the first of five hits for the Doc’s in the frame. Ghasedi later scored on an single by Shawn Rigsby. Chris Stone and Will Reddekopp also drove in runs and the Doc’s pulled the score to 6-4 going to the fourth.
Both sides added runs in the fourth inning, but the Expos pulled away with eight runs over the fifth and sixth innings. The Doc’s committed four errors in those two innings accounting for four of the runs.
Jack Gamba led the Expos offensively with three hits including a double. Nehring finished with a team high three RBI.
Shawn Rigsby led the offensive effort for the Doc’s with two hits and two RBI. The Doc’s finished with six players recording a hit.
The Doc Stewart’s get two days off before visiting the Klamath Falls Falcons for a league doubleheader on Tuesday. The twin bill starts at 6 p.m. from Kiger Stadium. Pregame coverage the games starts at 5:45 p.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com.
