ROSEBURG – A plaque dedication was held at Legion Field on Wednesday for two legendary Doc Stewart’s head coaches. Bill Harper and Don Severson were both honored with ceremonial plaques in a small ceremony of family and former Doc Stewart’s players.
Harper, who passed away in September of 2015, and Severson were the first two coaches in Doc Stewart’s history and each will now have a plaque hung near the grand stands by the Doc’s dugout to commemorate their service to American Legion baseball.
Harper coached the Doc’s from 1954 to 1963 and led the team to five state titles and three world series appearances. He is the winningest coach in the organization’s history and not only put Roseburg, but the whole state of Oregon, on the baseball map.
Severson took over for Harper in 1964 after being an assistant coach on his teams. Severson only coached until 1967, but he totaled 110 wins and still has the second-highest winning percentage in program history.
The plaques for Harper and Severson will join dozens more that are hung at Legion Field to commemorate the service of others to American Legion baseball.
