HILLSBORO – Three Doc Stewart’s pitchers combined for a 2-0 shutout of the Portland Barbers in game one of a doubleheader on Monday at Liberty High School. The win came in extra innings and was the first of the season for the Doc’s.
Neither team managed a run in regulation as the pitching staffs kept the hitters off balance. The teams combined for just four hits through the first seven innings. At one point Portland’s starter Alex Batke had retired 12 straight batters, while the Doc’s pitchers retired 16 straight hitters from third inning to the start of the eighth.
The Doc’s finally broke through with a pair of hits in the eighth inning. Dustin Eakin led-off the inning with a single to right field and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Terrell Jacks. Shawn Rigsby drove in the go-ahead run with a double down the leftfield line and later scored on a wild pitch.
Chrisitian Osborne pitched only two inning of relief, but picked up the win for the Doc’s by inducing back-to-back groundouts with a runner on base in the bottom of the eighth inning. The victory is the first of the season for Osborne.
The Doc’s dropped the second game of the doubleheader 11-4. The Barbers jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two innings off of Doc’s starter Braxton Beerbohm. The Doc Stewart’s cut the deficit in half with four runs in the fifth inning, but the Barbers added three more runs over the fifth and sixth innings to keep the Doc’s at bay.
The Doc’s pitching staff surrendered a three-run home run to Brayden Bafaro in a seven-run second inning and a two-run blast to Brad Hellbush in the sixth. The Barbers finished with 11 hits.
The Doc’s managed just six hits off of Portland starter Blake Crippen. All of the Doc’s runs came in the fifth inning, when the team sent nine hitters to the plate. A two-run double by Cam Lierman plated the final two runs of the inning for the Doc’s.
Up next, the Doc Stewart’s host the Grants Pass Nuggets for a league doubleheader on Wednesday. The series will take place at Legion Field, with first pitch of game one slated for 6 p.m. Follow the action on 1490 The Score or watch the game online at 541radio.com.
