SALEM – Big-game hunters, you will soon know whether you have drawn tags for the 2016-2017 hunting season. The Oregon Fish & Wildlife Commission is scheduled to meet Thursday and Friday in Salem and it is expected to set the number of controlled hunt tags that will be awarded.
The proposed number of tags for deer, elk, bighorn, mountain goat, pronghorn, and bear hunts is set at 144,742. That number is down less than 1% from 2015.
Once the tag limits are set, a lottery system will decide which lucky hunters out of approximately 400,000 applicants will be awarded one of those controlled hunt tags. The results of the lottery draw are reportedly set to be announced no later than June 20. Hunters can check for the results of the lottery online or by telephone (1-800-708-1782) as early as next week.
