BEAVERTON – Yoncalla’s Will Shaw was a winner on Monday night at the Oregon Sports Awards. The three-sport standout for the Eagles was named the Johnny Carpenter Prep Male Athlete of the Year for the 1A-4A classifications.
Shaw played football, basketball, and baseball for Yoncalla. He was the the league offensive Player of the Year in football, made the All-State team in basketball, and was the league MVP in baseball during his senior year. He’s been invited to state All-Star events for all three sports and has committed to play baseball at SW Oregon Community College next year. He was also named to the Doc Stewart’s roster for the summer American Legion baseball season.
Shaw follows in the footsteps of former Oakland Oaker David Henry, who won the statewide award in 2013. The Carpenter Prep Athlete of the Year award is named in honor of Johnny Carpenter, who was a pioneer sports broadcaster for Portland television station KOIN from 1937 until his retirement in 1969. He helped found the Oregon Sports Writers and Sportscasters Association.
