WICHITA, Kan. Oregon State junior Logan Ice is one of three finalists for the prestigious Johnny Bench Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top collegiate catcher.

Ice is looking to become the first Oregon State catcher to earn the honor, which is announced just a week after he was named the Pac-12 Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named an All-Pac-12 First Team selection.

The 2016 season was a breakout campaign for Ice, who batted .310 with 13 doubles, five triples, seven home runs and 39 runs batted in. He was stellar defensively, posting a .990 fielding percentage with just one passed ball. He threw out better than 44 percent of opposing basestealers, which was the best mark among the 15 Johnny Bench Award semifinalists that were announced in mid-May.

A native of Puyallup, Wash., Ice has excelled defensively since joining the program in 2014 from Rogers High School. In three seasons with the Beavers, he has committed only four passed balls in 164 games.

Opposing basestealers have attempted only 101 stolen bases against Ice over his career, and he’s thrown out 49 for a sterling 48.5 percent mark.

Ice is joined by Miami’s Zack Collins and North Florida’s Keith Skinner. Per the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, which announced the finalists, a final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 19th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30, 2016.
