ROSEBURG – Post season awards continue to roll out for high school spring sports and major honors were handed out to two Roseburg baseball players this week. Seniors Chris Stone and Zack Watkins were named to the 6A All-State team, head coach Troy Thompson announced at the team’s end-of-year banquet on Wednesday night.

Stone was voted second team at the utility position. It’s his first selection to the All-State team and it follows his first team All-League selection in the Southwest Conference. Stone played multiple outfield  positions for the Indians and started on the mound. The senior has committed to play baseball next year with Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

Watkins earned honorable mention recognition in the infield after being named first team All-League in the Southwest Conference. The senior spent time at second base and shortstop for the Indians. This is his first All-State award.

The awards for Stone and Watkins mark the second-straight year that Roseburg has had an All-State player. In 2015, junior Chance Beecher received honorable mention recognition.

The full All-State awards have not been released, but should come out over the weekend or early next week after voting is done for the state Player and Coach of the Year.

Team awards were also handed out during the baseball banquet. Seniors Will Reddekopp and Zack Watkins were voted co-MVPs by their teammates. Reddekopp was also voted Most Inspirational. Sophomore Terrell Jacks was voted as Most Improved.

Reddekopp was also honored as the 2016 Russell Award scholarship winner. The award is named after former Roseburg baseball player Rusty Smith, who died in a car wreck shortly after graduating. His parents, Randy and Diane Smith, have awarded a Roseburg senior baseball player a $500 college tuition scholarship for the past 20 years in Rusty’s honor. Will is planning to continue his education and baseball career at Linn-Benton Community College.
