ROSEBURG – A large contingent of local baseball players converged on Legion Field Wednesday afternoon trying to carry their success from the spring season into the summer with the Roseburg American Legion teams.
Tryouts began at 4 p.m. Wednesday and more than 50 players showed up for a shot at making the rosters of the Doc Stewarts, Umpqua Lions, and the Pepsi Bottlecaps. Those in attendance included players from nine Umpqua Basin schools. A majority of those were from Roseburg High, but many also came from South Umpqua, Douglas, Sutherlin, and small schools like Yoncalla and Elkton.
Head coach Scott Shaver said that on average about 40-50 players turnout for tryouts. Numbers appear to be slightly higher this season and there are still a few collegiate players that are expected to return to the team for their final year of eligibility.
Tryouts continue on Thursday and Friday and preliminary rosters might be ready by as early as Friday night. The Doc’s get the season underway against the Portland Barbers on Monday, June 13 at Liberty High School.
