ROSEBURG – The Roseburg softball team scored early often against the Sprague Olympians and pulled off a 5-2 win in the first round of the 6A state playoffs on Monday.

The Indians scored two runs in each of the first two innings to build a 4-0 lead that the Olympians couldn’t overcome. Senior pitcher Ashley Martin allowed only one earned run and struck out five while spreading nine hits over seven innings to earn the win.

Martin was supported by an offense that recorded 11 hits. The top third of the lineup did most of the heavy lifting recording six of the 11 Roseburg hits and three of the team’s four RBI. Freshman catcher Samie Bergmann led three Indians with multiple hits, collecting three hits and finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

Bergmann got Roseburg on the board with a run in the first. The freshman led off Roseburg’s first at bats with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Marinda Carlyle. Senior Baylee Wyscaver brought Bergmann home with a single to put the Indians up 1-0.

Sprague ended the shutout with an unearned run in the fourth inning. The Olympians added their final run in the seventh after McKell McCuistion reached on a leadoff double. She eventually scored on a one-out sacrifice fly, but the Sprague rally was cut short when the next hitter grounded out to end the game.

Roseburg will next host the Reynolds Raiders from the Mt. Hood Conference in the second round on Wednesday. Reynolds, ranked 23rd by the OSAA, upset No. 10 Beaverton 4-2 in the first round on Monday. Game time for the second round contest is still to be determined.
