CORVALLIS – The 2016 golf state championships concluded on Tuesday and while there was not a local golfer at the top of the leaderboard, there were some strong showings by Umpqua Basin athletes.
Roseburg’s Cole Dittemore was competing as an individual at the 6A boy’s state tournament in Corvallis at Trysting Tree Golf Course. The junior moved 16 spots up the leaderboard on day two, to finish the tournament tied for 16th. Dittemore shot one-over-par for his second round and finished with a total score of 151 for both rounds combined. His score was nine shots behind the state champion, Reese Fisher from South Medford.
The Roseburg girl’s team finished 10th in the team scores at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, OR. Leading the way was sophomore Brynn Pitts, who surged up three spots on the final day to finish tied for 41st. Freshman Ally Sandfort struggled on day two after leading the Indians during the opening round. Sandfort fell 25 spots in the rankings and finished tied for 43rd.
In the 4A state tournaments, the Sutherlin boys golf team moved up two spots in the final standings after a much sharper second day of play at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell. Junior Matt Black led the Bulldogs with a 10th place finish. Black moved up seven spots after his first round. Junior Jeremiah Scroggins also made a large jump in the standings thanks to a low score on day two. Scroggins moved up 16 spots to finish 23rd.
The Sutherlin girls golf team stayed in last place in the state standings, but did shoot better than its first day total. Leading the way was senior Tannor Langdon-Moser, who finished tied for 24th.
