TRI-CITIES, OR – South Umpqua senior shortstop Alexis Westbrooks was voted the Far West League softball Player of the Year by the league’s coaches during the end-of-year league meeting on Sunday.

Westbrooks helped guide the Lady Lancers to a third place finish in the Far West League and a 16-10 overall record. She led the team offensively with a .615 batting average, 21 runs batted in, and an .807 slugging percentage. Westbrooks was also the anchor of the defense, committing just three errors all season at shortstop. The senior pitched a few innings for the Lancers as well, helping fill-in for freshman Tayah Kelley, who did most of the pitching and was voted second team All-League.

Westbrooks has committed to George Fox, where she will continue her softball career playing for the Bruins. Prior to starting her college career, Westbrooks will try to help South Umpqua reach the state playoffs for the first time since 2014 when the Lancers visit Mazama for a play-in game on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Joining Westbrooks on the list of All-League award winners are South Umpqua seniors Chanel Stewart (1st Team, OF) and Emilee Mueller (HM, First Base), junior Emma Lind (1st Team, OF), and freshmen Tayah Kelley (2nd Team, P) and Kalie Mann (2nd Team, INF).

The Douglas softball team won the league championship in 2016 and head coach Brad Deaver shared the Coach of the Year award with Marshfield’s Brooke Toy as a reward.

The Lady Trojans were also well represented on the All-League teams after the successful season. Senior pitcher Cidny Duper was voted 1st Team All-League along with senior first baseman Skyler Coate, infielders Ally Schofield and Molly Lavin-Williams, and outfielder Taylor Holcomb. Senior Rylee Holcomb was voted 2nd Team in the outfield and junior Sahara Johnson was a 2nd Team selection at catcher. Junior Darian Mitchell was an honorable mention selection in the infield.

The Douglas softball team made the first round of the state playoffs as the Far West League champions. The Trojans are waiting to find out their first round opponent once the play-in round is complete.
