MEDFORD – The Southwest Conference track and field district meet got underway on Thursday and already two Roseburg athletes have punched their ticket to the state meet next week.

Roseburg sophomores Tyler Sconce and Dalton Rasmussen both finished second in their events to qualify for the state meet. Sconce had one of his better throws this season, but came up about 4.5 feet shy of first place in the shot put. He’ll have a chance to improve on his mark when he heads to the state meet for the first time. Sconce has one of the 10 best shot put throws in the state this season.

Rasmussen hit a new personal record mark with his javelin throw of 164-feet, 7-inches. It’s only the third time in the sophomore’s career that he has broken the 160-foot barrier and his new PR is two-feet better than his previous. Rasmussen will also be making his first trip to state. His throw at the district meet Thursday was the 14th best throw at the 6A level this season.

The track and field district meet continues on Saturday at South Medford High School. Roseburg will hope to have a few of its runners qualify for the state meet after promising preliminary races. Seniors Mahala Norris and Rebecca Sidlo finished first and fourth, respectively, in the 800 meter race.

Norris has had faster times this season than the 2 min, 21 second race that she ran on Thursday, but her time was still nearly two seconds faster than second place. Norris will be the presumptive favorite heading into the final race on Saturday.

The first events on Saturday get started at 12:30 p.m. with boys discus, boys high jump, and girls triple jump.
