ROSEBURG – The Roseburg softball team won two games against the Thurston Colts to end the regular season on Friday and secure a second place finish in the Southwest Conference.
The Indians won game one 2-1 with a walk-off hit from sophomore Katie Ladd in the bottom of the seventh. Roseburg went ahead 1-0 in the home half of the fifth inning on a single by freshman Samie Bergmann. Her hit drove in Bailey Daniels who was hit by a pitch to get on base.
Roseburg carried that 1-0 lead into the seventh inning and the Indians were three outs away from claiming victory, but the Colts rallied to tie the score. With runners at second and third and no outs, Thurston’s hitter grounded out. After the throw to first, the Colts’ runner at second was caught off the bag and the Indians made the second out there.
While Roseburg was picking off the runner at second, the runner at third stole home and scored to even things at 1-1.
Bergmann’s hit in the bottom of the seventh came with one out, scoring Jordan Gibson from second base. The walk-off win was a little retribution for Roseburg’s loss to the Colts in extra innings earlier in the season.
The Indians went on to sweep the doubleheader with a 5-2 win in game two.
Roseburg finished the conference season three games behind first place North Medford. The Black Tornado lost only twice in the conference season. Both of those losses came against the Indians.
Up next, the Indians will finish the regular season with a non-league game against Marist before starting the post season. The first round of the state playoffs begin on May 23.
