ROSEBURG – The Roseburg girl’s tennis team in second place after day one of the Southwest Conference district tournament on Thursday.
Leading the way for the Indians is sophomore Adrienne Powell, who qualified for the state tournament by advancing to the semifinals of the singles bracket at the district tournament. Powell won her first round match in straight sets, but had to go to three sets to win in the second round against Sheldon’s Emma Piazza. The sophomore won in straight sets in the quarterfinals to advance to the semis against North Medford’s Kristina Ribeiro. Ribeiro is the overall two-seed. Powell is the three-seed.
The semifinal match is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Umpqua Tennis Center in Roseburg, where the final day of the district tournament will take place.
Powell is the only Roseburg girl still competing in the district tournament, but she wasn’t the only one to advance in the brackets. In the singles bracket, Roseburg had three players advance to the second round. Besides Powell, Sydnie Novak and Ashley McCraw also won first round matches for Roseburg, but both lost in the second round.
The Indians had four doubles teams advance to the second round on Thursday, but only two made it to the quarterfinals. The tandems of Carissa Roman and Jessica Hernandez and Megan Danielson and Reena Daley both made it to the quarterfinals, but lost in straight sets to end their runs.
Roseburg as a team is two points behind South Medford, but the Indians can only score four more points in the tournament, while the Panthers have eight possible points remaining. Day two of the girl’s tennis district tournament will be played at the Umpqua Tennis Center in Roseburg. The first matches of the day are scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
