KEIZER – Steven Kwan posted his first career four-hit game and KJ Harrison hit his eighth home run of the season but Oregon State dropped a 7-5 decision to Portland Tuesday night at Volcanoes Stadium.
Kwan singled three times – two on bunts – and doubled for his first multi-hit game of the season. The four-hit effort pushed the freshman’s hit streak to a season-long five games, where he is 8-for-11 with a double.
Harrison, meanwhile, drove an 0-1 pitch from Portland reliever Jordan Lockwood over the fence in right for his team-leading eighth round tripper of the season. It also pushed his season RBI total to 39 on the year, which is one shy of the Pac-12 Conference lead.
Harrison’s home run pushed Oregon State (29-16 overall) to a 3-0 lead after a pair of sacrifice flies in the first two innings. But the Pilots scored six in the top half of the fourth to gain the lead.
OSU made it a one-run game with two in the bottom half of the fourth. Christian Donahue, who finished with three hits, singled home a run, then watched as Caleb Hamilton drove in his 14th run of the season on a sac fly.
Portland (17-29) pushed its lead to 7-5 on a solo home run in the seventh by Grant Taylor.
The Beavers finished with 13 hits off two Portland pitchers, but left 11 runners on base. Lockwood picked up the win for the Pilots after allowing seven hits and three runs in seven innings. He improved to 2-2.
Jordan Britton started for the Beavers and allowed five runs – four earned – on one hit and five walks in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out four and took the loss to drop to 0-2.
The loss snapped a 25-game win streak for the Beavers over the Pilots.
The Beavers begin a three-game series with Oregon on Friday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
