EUGENE – The Roseburg baseball team had no issues getting runners on base Tuesday against the Willamette Wolverines, but scoring those runners proved to be far more difficult as the Indians left 14 runners stranded in a 2-1 loss.
Roseburg took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Chance Beecher sacrifice fly that scored Treven Jacks, who led off the inning with a walk. Willamette scored twice in the bottom half of the third inning to pull ahead of the Indians and neither side manufactured a run the rest of the contest.
The Indians had plenty of chances. Roseburg got the leadoff batter on base in every inning except the fourth. Of the 14 runners left stranded, 10 of them were left in scoring position.
Roseburg had its best opportunities to score in the final three innings. In the fifth, back-to-back singles to leadoff the inning went to waste as Willamette starter Josh Glover retired the next three batters he faced. In the sixth, Roseburg’s Luke Lucido drew a leadoff walk and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Beecher. He advanced to third on a groundout, but was stranded there on an infield pop-out.
Trailing by one run in the seventh inning, Roseburg’s leadoff hitter, Will Reddekopp, was hit by a pitch and then moved into scoring position on a sac bunt from Cam Lierman. Treven Jacks was also hit by a pitch and Roseburg had two runners on with just one out. Both runners later moved up a bag, but Glover ended the game by striking out the next two batters.
Glover pitched a complete game to earn the win. He allowed one run on five hits, walked seven, hit two, and struck out six. Chris Stone took the loss for Roseburg. The senior tossed six innings, allowed six hits, one earned run, one walk, and had six strikeouts.
Roseburg has now lost four straight games and nine of its last 10. The Indians have fallen into fifth place in the conference standings, but can still earn an automatic berth in the state playoffs. Roseburg will need to win both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against Willamette in order to have a chance at a top four finish in league, plus the Indians still need South Eugene or South Medford to lose their final two games of the regular season.
Roseburg’s doubleheader against Willamette begins at noon on Saturday at Legion Field. Pregame coverage gets underway at 11:45 a.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com.
