ROSEBURG – After a lengthy coaching search to replace longtime head coach Thurman Bell, the Roseburg Indians have finally found their man. Athletic Director Russ Bolin announced Wednesday morning that Dave Heuberger has accepted the position as Roseburg’s next head football coach.

Heuberger comes to Roseburg from Springfield High School, where he led the 5A Millers’ football team for four years. During that time he amassed a 36-10 overall record and guided the Millers to their first league title and playoff win in more than 50 years. Under Heuberger, the Millers went to the state quarterfinals three times and the semifinals once.

Roseburg had 20 applicants for the position of coach and teacher, but Bolin says it was Heuberger’s winning record, commitment to players, passion for the game, and dedication to students’ academic excellence that made him the right choice.

“I wanted someone who was going to be a good fit for our kids, our coaches, our school culture, and our community,” said Bolin. “Dave fits that.”

Besides coaching at Springfield, Heuberger has also been an assistant coach at Rex Putnam High School, Marist Catholic High School, and Scappoose High School. He was a part of state championship teams with both Marist and Scappoose.

In addition to his coaching duties, Heuberger will teach in the physical education and health department. This will allow the new coach to be on campus throughout the school day, something that former coach Thurman Bell said was a necessity and one of the reasons he felt last year was the right time to retire.

Coach Bell spent 45 years as the head coach at Roseburg and finished with 331 wins in his career, the most of any coach at the big-school level.

Heuberger will move to Roseburg this summer with his wife, Lisa, and their two daughters.

The appointment of Heuberger to the head coaching and teaching position is pending board approval. The Roseburg Public Schools’ Board of Directors will vote on the hiring at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, May 11.
