UMPQUA BASIN – The Douglas and South Umpqua softball teams both won Far West League games on Tuesday, adding some intrigue to Friday’s doubleheader showdown.
Douglas stayed perfect in league play with a 15-0 win over last place Brookings-Harbor. South Umpqua remained two-games behind Douglas with an 11-3 win over North Bend.
The Lady Lancers will next visit the Lady Trojans on Friday for a doubleheader, which will put first place Douglas up against second place South Umpqua. A sweep for South Umpqua would move the Lady Lancers into first place. If Douglas were to sweep the twin bill, the Lady Trojans would be one more win away from clinching the outright Far West League title.
Friday’s doubleheader between Douglas and South Umpqua begins at 3 p.m. in Winston.
The Glide baseball team held on to sole possession of first place in the Mt. Valley Conference for one day before falling back into a tie with Pleasant Hill. The Wildcats lost 2-1 against third place La Pine in nine innings Tuesday, one day after taking over first place with an 8-5 win over Pleasant Hill on Monday.
The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Wildcats. Glide will try to get back to winning with a conference doubleheader against Coquille on Friday.
