ROSEBURG – The Roseburg baseball team suffered its first sweep of the conference season on Saturday as the South Medford Panthers won both games of a doubleheader at Legion Field.

The Panthers handed Roseburg losses of 12-5 in game one and 9-6 in game two. The Indians struggled to hold South Medford’s offense in check. The Panthers tied a season-high with 12 runs in game one and had 30 hits total in the twin bill.

South Medford scored in six of the seven innings played in game one and extended a 3-1 advantage with a four-run fourth inning. The Panthers had four hits in the inning, but a pair of errors proved to be most costly for the Indians. Roseburg might have been its own worst enemy in game one, committing seven errors total.

The Indians fought back into the game with two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth to make the score 7-4 in South Medford’s favor. Any momentum was short lived as the Panthers scored three runs in the sixth and another two runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Roseburg took a 2-1 lead after one inning of play in game two. The Indians stretched the advantage to 6-2 with runs in the third and fourth innings, but once again South Medford proved difficult to hold in check. The Panthers scored six times in the sixth inning to build a 9-6 advantage, which the Indians were unable to recover from.

The three-game winning streak is the first of the season for South Medford. It’s the second time this year that Roseburg has lost three consecutive games.

The Indians remain tied for second place in the Southwest Conference. North Medford lost three-straight games against conference-leader Sheldon and the Black Tornado sit tied with Roseburg at 7-5 in SWC play. Roseburg and North Medford meet in a three-game series next week with game one on Tuesday in Medford. Game time is 4:30 p.m. and coverage on the radio and online will start at 4:15 p.m.
