ROSEBURG – A man hailed as a hero after the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College last fall is up for a different type of recognition.
Chris Mintz was shot five times on October 1, 2015 as he tried to help his fellow students escape during the shooting on campus. He survived the attack and has received numerous awards since the shooting for his courageous actions, but he is now one of five finalist to have the Crown Royal Brickyard 400 named after him.
For the past 10 years, Crown Royal has named the race after a hero chosen by a fan vote. The July 24-event takes place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and fans can vote on which hero will be honored until June 9.
