NEWBERG – Noah Avery, a Roseburg High grad and a current multi-sport athlete at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, sits in third place after day one of the Northwest Conference decathlon championships on Monday. Avery is only 46 points behind the leader, JC Grimm of Linfield, after competing in five of the 10 decathlon events. The group of 13 competitors will finish the final five events on Tuesday at George Fox University in Newberg.

Avery placed fourth or better in four of the first five events. The freshman finished tied for first in the high jump, second in the shot put, third in the 100 meter race, fourth in the long jump, and eighth in the 400 meter race. Day two of the competition consists of the 110 meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1,500 meters.

Avery also plays for the Lewis & Clark football team during the fall season. As a freshman he played in eight games as a defensive back for the Pioneers.
